The pre-match thoughts ahead of the Premier League encounter between hosts Liverpool and Aston Villa was dominated by the return of club legend Steven Gerrard to Anfield in a managerial capacity in the colours of Villa. His team gave a good account of themselves on the defensive front during the game as the Reds needed the brilliance of Salah to unlock the Villa defence. Salah was too tricky for Villa skipper Tyrone Mings who brought him down in the box and was thereafter penalised. Salah made no mistake from the spot kick to give Liverpool a slim win over Villa.

Liverpool talisman Salah was able to extend his Golden Boot lead to five goals after Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy sat on the substitutes bench for the whole game as the Foxes beat Newcastle United 4-0 at home thanks to the goals from YouriTielemans (two goals), PatsonDaka and James Maddison.

Vardy is the closest challenge to Salah in the Premier League Golden Boot race and he has nine goals. Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota completes the top three after netting eight goals in the English top flight this season.

Salah would be hoping to extend his lead further when Liverpool and Newcastle United face each other later his week in the Premier League.
